Fasting and Abstinence in Lenten Season For Christians

Majority of us are Christian/Catholic in religion, fasting and abstinence in Lenten season is one of our traditional doctrines. Fasting and abstinence is a way of turning away from sin and going back to God, this includes some form of penance, without which the Christian is unlikely to remain on the narrow path and be saved.

I have listed here the tips on what to do to at least be a part of this tradition (the Lenten season):

  1. Do not eat too much. Have Fasting on meaty and expensive foods, this is strictly obligatory in United States. Amphibians, fish and reptiles are permitted to eat. vegetables and fruits are highly recommended. This starts from Ash Wednesday until Good Friday.
  2. Avoid drinking alcoholic drinks beyond limits.
  3. Try not to engage with parties and happenings not related to religious acts. (this includes swimming at beaches and rivers, going to amusement parks, and going out of town)
  4. Refrain from too much usage of internet as it consumes time which has to be offered in praying to God. Religious sites and blog are exceptions.
  5. Too much watching television is not recommended except for religious and holy shows.
  6. Pray. Pray from the heart.
  7. Hanging at the cross is not advisable.
But not all are required to do this fasting and abstinence this Lenten season, Here are the exceptions:

  1. Those outside the age limits (the young Christians),
  2. Those with unsound minds,
  3. Those who are sick, frail and pregnant and
  4. Those who doesn’t eat vegetables.
Despite all these limits, traditions and practices, just bear in mind that this Lenten Season only happens once a year. It still depends on us if we want to follow these suggestions. These are just guidelines. What matters most at the end of the day is that you have your faith and you believe that there is someone out there guiding us in all our pursuits.
